Stephen Born Named Academic All-American for Third Straight Year
AUSTIN, Texas – For the third straight year senior outfielder Stephen Born (Strafford, Pa.) was selected as a Google Cloud Academic All-American. On Thursday, Born was announced as one of three outfielders on the national first team. A recent graduate of the Naval Academy, Born becomes the first Midshipmen baseball player in program history to earn this prestigious honor three times in a career. In terms of all Naval Academy student-athletes in the institution’s history, Born is just the fifth three-time award winner.
Born earned his way onto the All-America ballot after being named to the All-District II First Team on May 10. In total, 33 student-athletes from across the NCAA Division I ranks were selected over three teams. Born is one of seven honorees to be named as a repeat performer as he is joined by Georgia State’s IF Justin Jones, Louisiana’s P Dylan Moore, UNC Greensboro’s OF Andrew Moritz, McNeese State’s IF Joe Provenzano, Tennessee Tech’s IF Trevor Putzig and Southern Miss’ P Nick Sandlin. Born, Jones and Moore have earned Academic All-America honors for three straight years.
Dallas Baptist’s Devlin Granberg was selected as the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-American of the Year in recognition of his 4.00 GPA in kinesiology and athletic prowess that saw him named a Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. He hit .443 with 112 hits, 13 home runs and 26 stolen bases.
Born, Navy's starting rightfielder, majored in operations research while a Midshipmen at the Naval Academy. He graduated in May with a 3.80 GPA and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. He will be an officer in the Navy’s submarine community. On the field in 2018, the All-Patriot League Second Team outfielder completed his season with a .318 batting average, 43 runs scored, 69 hits, 12 doubles, six triples, 44 RBIs and 16 stolen bases over 54 games. He ranked second in the Patriot League in triples, third in both hits and RBIs, fourth in stolen bases, fifth in runs and seventh in batting average.
For his career, Born completed his time with the Midshipmen with a .315 batting average, 141 runs scored, 222 hits, 43 doubles, 13 triples, five home runs, 133 RBIs and 36 stolen bases over 198 games.
