Three Mids Named to Patriot League Academic Honor Roll
July 9, 2008
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Three recent graduates from the Navy baseball team were among the group of 61 student-athletes named to the 2008 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday. To be eligible for the honor roll, student-athletes must have attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.20 during the 2008 spring semester and earned a varsity letter during the 2008 season. Team captain Thomas Hamilton (Houston, Texas) earned a 3.27 grade-point average in the spring while majoring in International Relations. On the field, Hamilton earned ABCA/Rawlings Second-Team All-Northeast Region and First-Team All-Patriot League kudos by virtue of his league-best .403 batting average and league-record 89 base hits. He drove in 49 runs and reached base safely at a .485 clip - also aided by getting hit by a pitch a school-record 20 times in 2008. Southpaw reliever Kevin Heasley (Cincinnati, Ohio) produced a 3.53 grade-point average in Mechanical Engineering in his final semester in Annapolis. Athletically, Heasley was a key arm of out the bullpen in 2008, as he went 2-1 with a save and a 4.20 ERA in 18 appearances. During his 30 innings of work, he walked only seven batters and held the opposition to a .274 batting average. Outfielder Mark Guadagnini (Virginia Beach, Va.) worked his way to a 3.25 grade-point average during the spring while studying in Quantitative Economics. With the baseball team, Guadagnini made the most of his opportunities at the plate. He hit .357 in reserve duty with four runs scored, a double, a RBI and a stolen base. Following graduation from the Academy last May, each of the former Midshipmen are now serving in the United States Navy. Hamilton became a surface warfare officer, while Heasley joined the nuclear submarine community and Guadagnini entered into the aviation field to become a Navy pilot.
Navy (32-25-1, 11-9 Patriot League) hosted the Patriot League Championship in 2008 and finished the season by setting school records for the most wins over a four-year (111), three-year (99) and two-year span (67). |
