In his first season at Navy in 2017-18, Spayd helped the Mids to a 20-12 record. The 20 wins were the most by Navy since the 1999-00 season and were tied for the sixth-most in a single season in program history. Navy also won the 2018 Star Game by earning a 68-59 win at Army West Point.
Navy led the Patriot League in scoring defense, rebounding margin and offensive rebounds per game in 2017-18, and Navy ranked in the top-40 of the NCAA in scoring defense.
Senior guard Shawn Anderson was named to the All-Patriot League First Team, while senior guard Bryce Dulin was named to the Patriot League All-Defensive Team.
Spayd arrived at Navy after serving as the Director of Performance in the strength and conditioning department at the Alabama University at Birmingham (UAB) during the 2016-17 season. Spayd led all aspects of strength and conditioning for the men's and women's basketball programs and the men's and women's golf programs.
Prior to UAB, Spayd spent six years at Penn State in the strength and conditioning department. Spayd was an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for his first three years (2010-13) and was promoted to Performance Enhancement Coordinator for his final three years (2013-16) at Penn State.
Spayd worked primarily with the men's and women's basketball programs while at Penn State, while also assisting with football.
Spayd also interned with Penn State in the summer of 2010 and spent one year as an intern in the Juniata College strength and conditioning department.
Spayd graduated from Juniata College in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in sports management and marketing. He earned a master's degree in exercise science - performance enhancement and injury prevention from California University of Pennsylvania in 2011.
Spayd was a four-year starting strong safety on the Juniata College football team. He was a two-time team captain and he earned NSCA All-America honors in 2009.
Spayd is certified as a U.S. Weightlifting Level I Sports Performance Coach and a NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist. He holds certifications from the National Association of Speed and Explosion and has a Level I SKOGG System Coach Certification. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and is a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
