WASHINGTON, D.C.-Arvydas Eitutavicius scored 15 points and Andre Ingram added 12 points as American (10-16, 6-7 in the Patriot League) rolled to a 65-48 Patriot League victory over Navy (10-16, 3-10 in the Patriot League) in front of 1,620 fans at Bender Arena.
"American's level of intensity tonight was at a championship level," said Navy head coach Billy Lange. "We were able to play some minutes at that level, but we were never able to sustain it. I thought we defended tonight, but we couldn't score."
Navy struggled on offense all night, making just 18 of its 50 field goal attempts (36 percent) and turning the ball over 20 times. The Mids leading scorer, Greg Sprink (15 points per game), was held to just one field goal on six attempts in 31 minutes.
"Andre Ingram did a great job on Sprink all night," said Lange. "He was able to get through every screen."
Navy trailed by just one point (14-13) with 7:36 left in the first half before missing eight of its final nine shots and turning the ball over four times as the Eagles went on a 14-6 run to take a 28-19 lead at the half.
It was more of the same in the second half as American scored nine of the first 11 points to go up 37-21 and never looked back as the Mids fell behind by as many as 25 points before finishing the game on a 15-7 run.
Sprink and Carlton Baldwin led Navy with 10 points apiece. Baldwin was the leading rebounder with six.
With the loss, Navy falls into a sixth-place tie with Colgate, who the Mids will play host to on Saturday (3 p.m. at Alumni Hall). Saturday's game is important as the winner will play the loser of Sunday's Lehigh-Holy Cross game on a neutral court in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament, while the loser will play the winner of that game on their home court.
