BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Lehigh scored 25 points off 16 Navy turnovers and handed the Navy men's basketball team a 72-43 setback on Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.

The loss drops Navy to 8-21 overall and 2-11 in Patriot League play, while Lehigh improved to 19-8 overall and 9-4 in the league standings.

"We just turned the ball over way too much, which is something we haven't really done all year," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. "The first few minutes we were there with them, doing what we wanted to do, then we had four straight turnovers and that was that. For a team that has a tough time scoring like we do, a 10-0 run or a 12-0 run is very difficult for us to overcome."

The game was tied at 6-6 six minutes into the contest, but Lehigh would outscore the Midshipmen, 30-11, over the last 14 minutes to take a 36-17 halftime lead. The Mountain Hawks shot 13-of-24 (.542) in the first half and made seven of their 15 three-point attempts.

In addition, Navy was credited with 10 turnovers which resulted in 18 Lehigh points. The Midshipmen entered the game averaging just 10.3 miscues in league play.

Despite making four of its first five shots of the second half, Navy was not able to cut into the lead and the Mountain Hawks put the game out of reach with a 20-3 run over nine-plus minutes, cruising to a 72-43 victory.

"We didn't think we could guard them man-to-man, so we played a zone most of the night, but everything we did was a step slow or like we were stuck in mud. We didn't get out on shooters or get a hand up. We just provided no resistence," said DeChellis.

Navy shot 16-of-41 (.390) from the field, 5-of-17 (.294) from three-point range and 6-of-8 (.750) from the free throw line. Navy had 16 turnovers and were outrebounded, 30-22.

Lehigh was 26-of-48 (.542) from the field, 9-of-26 (.346) from three-point range and 11-of-19 (.579) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks were credited with 20 assists on 26 made field goals and had just seven turnovers, while grabbing 12 steals. Lehigh shot 17-of-22 (.773) from inside the three-point line.

Worth Smith (So. / Mooresville, N.C.) led Navy with 11 points. Brandon Venturini (So. / Allendale, Mich.) was next on the squad with five points, while Will Kelly (Fr. / Mount Laurel, N.J.) led Navy with four rebounds.

B.J. Bailey led four Lehigh players in double figures with 17 points.

Navy hosts Bucknell on Saturday in the final home game of the season, tipping off at 7:00 PM in Alumni Hall.
