Dunbar Named Rookie of the Week In Fourth Consecutive Week
Jan. 2, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy freshman point guard Tilman Dunbar has been voted the Patriot League / Anaconda Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The honor is the fourth weekly honor (Dec. 10, 17 and 27 and Jan. 2) for Dunbar and marks the fifth successive week that a Navy player was named Rookie of the Week after Kendall Knorr (Fr. / Concord, N.C.) won the award on Dec. 3.
The four straight Rookie of the Week honors are the second most in school history (J.J. Avila - five in 2010-11) and he becomes the seventh player in league history to be named Rookie of the Week four straight times (Army's David Ardayfio in 1991, Holy Cross' Nate Lufkin in 2002, Bucknell's Kevin Bettencourt in 2003, Lehigh's Marquis Hall in 2007, Lehigh's C.J. McCollum in 2010, Navy's J.J. Avila in 2011).
In addition, his four Rookie of the Week citations are the third most in school history for a Navy player (Michael Heary - 6; J.J. Avila - 8).
Of the previous six players to win four straight Rookie of the Week citations, all six of them went on to win Patriot League Rookie of the Year accolades.
Dunbar, a 5-10 guard from Woodbridge, Va., averaged 17.0 points per game, 5.0 assists per game and 4.0 rebounds per game in Navy's lone action last week against Albany. He led the team in scoring for the second straight game and in assists for the seventh straight game while not committing a turnover for the first time in his career.
For the season, Dunbar leads the team in scoring (11.2 ppg). He is among the top 40 players nationally in assists while ranking second among the country's freshmen behind Texas' Javan Felix (6.5 apg). He is just the sixth freshman in school history with 150 points and 75 assists in a season and the first since Kaleo Kina in 2005-06.
He is one of six freshmen nationally to average 11.0 ppg and 5.0 apg.
Dunbar already ranks seventh on Navy's freshman single-season assists list (77), needing just nine assists to move into the top four. He also is already 27th on Navy's freshman single-season scoring list with 157 points.
The Midshipmen will return home for their Patriot League home opener on Jan. 16, against Holy Cross, beginning at 7:00 PM.
