CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore guard Greg Sprink (Cardiff, Calif.) was named the Patriot League Player of the Week by the league office Tuesday afternoon, while fellow teammate Clif Colbert (Grand Prairie, Texas) garnered Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week honors.
Sprink, who is the first Midshipman to earn player-of-the-week mention since Laramie Mergerson on March 1, 2004, earned the weekly honor after averaging 21.0 points and 6.0 rebounds a game last week in wins over Susquehanna and The Citadel. The second-year starter turned in 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Navy's 32-point win over Susquehanna, the Mids' largest margin of victory since thumping Gettysburg by 49 in 2002. Sprink followed up with a 31-point effort against The Citadel in which he connected on 10 of 17 field goals, including six of 11 from behind the arc. Having broken the 30-point barrier twice in the last three games, Sprink is the first Navy player to score 30-plus points twice in a season since Mike Heary scored 31 against Harvard on Jan. 2, 1997 and 38 against Holy Cross on Jan. 29, 1997. He is one of just nine players in school history to score 30 points multiple times in their careers.
Averaging 14.1 points per game, Sprink leads the Midshipmen in scoring and is fourth in the Patriot League. In addition, he ranks No. 2 in the conference in free throw percentage (.898), as well as three-point field goal percentage (.469).
Colbert earns Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week honors for the second times this season after recording 13.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in last week's victories. Colbert, who was also named the rookie of the week on Dec. 12, paced the Mids with 19 points against Susquehanna, and nearly etched his named into the Navy single-game steals record book, grabbing a Navy season-best five steals. In the Citadel win, he scored eight points and grabbed three boards. Heading into Navy's nonconference contest against UMBC tonight, Colbert needs just seven points to reach 100 for the season, becoming the second Navy freshman to post 100 points this year alongside Kaleo Kina (El Mirage, Ariz.).
Colbert is the team's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 8.5 points per game, and is atop the squad in steal, grabbing 1.5 per outing.
