ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's basketball player Brandon Venturini was named the Navy Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls Royce, for his effort in Navy's contest against Lafayette last weekend.
Venturini, a 6-0 sophomore guard from Allendale, Mich., tallied a career-high 23 points with three rebounds in the Mids' 64-47 setback to the Leopards. He connected on 8-of-17 shots, including 7-of-15 from three-point range to fuel the Navy offense. The seven three-pointers tied for the seventh most in a game in school history and were the third most by a Navy player against a Patriot League opponent. In addition, his 15 three-point attempts were tied for the most in school history. He scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, while making 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes.
His 23 points were the most for a Navy player this year and the most for a Midshipman since J.J. Avila scored 26 points against 10th-ranked Missouri on Dec. 10, 2011.
For the season, Venturini is second on the team in scoring (10.2) while sharing the Patriot League lead, and ranking third nationally among sophomores, in three-pointers made (44). Over his last 11 games, Venturini has made 33-of-73 (.452) from long distance and has at least four three-pointers in seven of those 11 games. For the entire season, Venturini is 44-of-114 (.386) from long three-point range.
Venturini and his teammates will host Holy Cross in the Patriot League home opener for the Midshipmen on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall, beginning at 7:00 PM (ET). Tickets are available by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the Alumni Hall ticket window one hour before tip-off.
