Navy Closes Out First Half of League Play at Bucknell

Navy (7-15, 1-5) closes out the first half of Patriot League play on Saturday when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa, and Sojka Pavilion for a 7:00 PM tip-off with the Bison. Pete Medhurst will handle the Navy radio call on WNAV (1430 AM, 99.9 FM, wnav.com), beginning with the Navy Basketball pregame show at 6:45 PM. Navy enters the contest with a 1-5 league mark after falling at home to Lehigh, 71-49, on Wednesday night. The Midshipmen have struggled in league play, averaging just 51.2 points per game while shooting just 34.4 percent from the field and 55.2 percent from the free throw line. Navy is being outrebounded by over six rebounds a game in league contests.
Freshman guard Tilman Dunbar continues to pace the squad, averaging 10.0 points per game and 5.1 assists per game. He became the first Navy freshman in school history with 100 assists (now with 112) and is currently one of three freshmen nationally (through Wednesday's games) with 200 points and 100 assists.
Sophomores Worth Smith (10.0 ppg) and Brandon Venturini (8.8 ppg) follow Dunbar in scoring. Smith leads the team in rebounding (5.9 rpg) while Venturini has made 50 three-ptrs.
Freshmen and sophomores have scored 1,040 of Navy's 1,269 points this year, accounting for 82.0 percent of the scoring. In league play, it jumps to 89.6 percent (275-of-307 points).
Bucknell enters Saturday's game with a share of the Patriot League lead at 5-1 and with an 18-4 overall mark. The Bison are coming off a last-second 56-55 win over American on Wednesday night. Bucknell's losses have come to Penn State, Missouri, Princeton and Lehigh.
One of the best players to ever play in the Patriot League, Mike Muscala, leads Bucknell by averaging a double-double (19.4 ppg, 11.1 rpg). Junior Cameron Ayers contributes 12.1 points per game. Bucknell has started the same lineup in all 22 games and its top four scorers (Muscala, Ayers, Joe Willman and Bryson Johnson) have scored 1,183-of-1,498 points, accounting for almost 80 percent of Bucknell's points.
Navy head coach Ed DeChellis (Penn State, 1982) is in his second year at Navy, owning a 10-41 record in Annapolis. He has undertaken massive rebuilding projects at East Tennessee State, Penn State and now Navy, owning a 229-272 career record in his 17th season as a collegiate head coach.
Dave Paulsen (Williams, 1987) is in his fifth year at Bucknell, owning a 89-63 record. He guided Williams to an NCAA D-III National Title and the Bison to the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
