Navy (7-17, 1-7) heads to the snowy Northeast on Tuesday night when it travels to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross (10-13, 2-6) at the Hart Center, beginning at 7:00 PM. Navy enters the contest with a 1-7 league mark after dropping a 70-47 decision to Lafayette on Saturday evening in Alumni Hall. The Midshipmen have struggled in league play, averaging just 51.0 points per game while shooting 34.3 percent from the field and 58.2 percent from the free throw line. Navy is being outrebounded by almost 10 rebounds a game in league contests.
Sophomore Worth Smith paces the Mids in scoring (10.1 ppg), rebounds (5.8 rpg), blocks (29) and steals (27) while freshman guard Tilman Dunbar averages 9.9 points per game and 5.1 assists per outing. He became the first Navy freshman in school history with 100 assists (now with 122).
Sophomore Brandon Venturini (8.8 ppg) has made 53 three-pointers on the season to rank fifth in the Patriot League in that category.
Freshmen and sophomores have scored 1,128 of Navy's 1,370 points this year, accounting for 82.3 percent of the scoring. In league play, it jumps to 89.0 percent (363-of-408 points). Navy's top nine scorers in league play are freshmen or sophomores.
About Holy Cross
Holy Cross enters the contest with a 10-13 overall mark and a 2-6 league record having lost five games in a row by an average margin of 11.2 points. During the five-game slide, Holy Cross has averaged just 56.6 points per game and shot 38.3 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from long distance.
Holy Cross is led by junior forward Dave Dudzinski, who ranks fourth in the Patriot League in scoring (15.7) and third in rebounding (6.9). Justin Burrell contributes 12.4 points per game and a team-best 3.1 assists per game. The 5-9 sophomore is shooting 38.1 percent from the field.
Navy head coach Ed DeChellis (Penn State, 1982) is in his second year at Navy, owning a 10-42 record in Annapolis. He has undertaken massive rebuilding projects at East Tennessee State, Penn State and now Navy, owning a 229-273 career record in his 17th season as a collegiate head coach.
Milan Brown (Howard, 1993) is in his third year as the head coach of Holy Cross, boasting a 33-48 record at Holy Cross and a 128-150 career record in his 10th season. Prior to Holy Cross, Brown was the head coach at Mount St. Mary's, where he led The Mount to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
