Brackets Set for Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament
Feb. 26, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- With the Patriot League regular season concluding yesterday, the pairings have been announced for the 2012 Patriot League men's basketball tournament, beginning Wednesday night at four campus sites.
The eighth-seeded Midshipmen will travel to Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell on Wednesday, tipping off at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available by calling 577-570-1000 or in person at the Weis Center Box Office on Bucknell's campus during business hours.
Should Navy upset the Bison, the Midshipmen would then play at either fourth-seeded Holy Cross or fifth-seeded Lafayette on Saturday, March 3 at either 2:00 or 4:30 pm. Both semifinal games will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
The finals will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed on Wednesday, March 7, beginning at 7:00 pm. The contest will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
The other half of the bracket features second-seeded Lehigh hosting seventh-seeded Colgate and third-seeded American taking on sixth-seeded Army.
Bucknell swept the season series with the Midshipmen this year, winning 66-51 in Annapolis on Jan. 28 and then again just Saturday night, 64-55, in Lewisburg. Bucknell has won four in a row in the series after Navy won five of the six previous meetings.
Navy leads the all-time series against Bucknell, 34-29.
Navy owns a 13-17 Patriot League Tournament record in 20 tournament appearances. Navy has not won a tournament game since 2001 as five of Navy's losses since that year have come in overtime.
Navy is 3-2 all-time against Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament, but is 0-2 against the Bison in the quarterfinal round. The Midshipmen are just 4-14 in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal round and are 0-2 in tournament games in Lewisburg, Pa.
It marks the fifth time that Navy will face the same opponent in the quarterfinals that it did in the regular-season finale (1994 vs. Army; 1995 vs. Lehigh; 2005 vs. American; 2009 vs. Colgate). Navy is 2-2 in the rematches.
The Mids are 1-5 all-time against the tournament top seed.
Individually, Jordan Sugars (Sr. / Winchester, Va.) is averaging 8.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg in three tournament games. No other player has appeared in more than one Patriot League Tournament game during their career.
