Monday's Game Basics
The Navy men's basketball team (9-20, 4-14 PL) will open play in the Patriot League Tournament at Colgate (12-17, 6-12 PL) on Monday at Cotterell Court at 7:00 PM in a first round matchup. Navy is the No. 10 seed and Colgate is the No. 7 seed. The winner will play at No. 2 American on Wednesday evening in the tournament's quarterfinals round.

With its 7:00 PM start, the Navy-Colgate game will be the first NCAA Division I conference tournament game of 2014. The Patriot League is the first conference to start its tournament and the other first round game between No. 9 Lafayette and No. 8 Loyola will not begin until 7:30 PM.

Midshipmen Storylines
• Navy (9-20) enters the postseason tournament on a four-game losing streak and most recently lost a 67-65 heartbreaker to Loyola on Saturday.
• Junior forward Worth Smith had 19 points and seven rebounds against Loyola while junior guard Brandon Venturini had 15 points, six assists and three steals.
• Smith leads the team in scoring (11.9) and rebounding (5.5) while Venturini is second in scoring (11.0) and first in assists (2.9) and steals (1.4).
• In conference only games, Smith ranked seventh in the league in rebounding (5.7) while Venturini was seventh in steals (1.5) and eighth in assists (3.3).
• Sophomore center Will Kelly ranks fifth in the Patriot League in overall games in blocked shots (1.4).
• Freshmen sharpshooters Tim Abruzzo and Zach Fong may find themselves ranked on Navy's freshman season 3-point field goal percentage chart.
• Heading into Monday's game, Abruzzo's season 3-point FG percentage of .406 ranks second and Fong's mark of .394 ranks third.
• Fong also currently sits fourth in the freshman record books for 3-pointers made in a season (50) and attempts (127).
• With Navy's nine overall wins, head coach Ed DeChellis has increased his win total in each of his first three years at Navy. The Mids won three games in 2012 and eight in 2013.
• With its four conference wins, Navy doubled its 2013 total of two.
• Navy has made at least one three-pointer in 334 consecutive games.
• Navy has an all-time record of 1,315-984 (.573).



Navy in the Patriot League Tournament
• Navy is making its 23rd appearance in the Patriot League Tournament and has an overall record of 13-19.
• Navy is playing in the Patriot League's inaugural `first round' game after the conference expanded to 10 teams.
• With the new Patriot League Tournament format, Navy had a quick turnaround following Saturday's regular season finale in Annapolis.
• Navy will be seeking its first Patriot League Tournament victory since winning in the league's semifinals in 2001.
• Navy currently has the nation's longest conference tournament losing streak at 13 games.
• However, five of those 13 losses have been in overtime.
• Navy has lost its first tournament game in 12-straight years (2002 to present).
• Saint Francis U has the second-longest conference tournament losing streak at 10 games.
• Navy has won three Patriot League Tournament Championships with its last coming in 1998.
• Boston University has earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament after winning the regular season in its inaugural year in the Patriot League with a 15-3 conference record.

Colgate Storylines
• Colgate won three-straight games to finish the regular season, moving from 10th place to the No. 7 seed during its steak.
• Colgate closed the season with wins over Loyola, Lafayette and Lehigh.
• Colgate finished in a three-way tie for seventh place with Lafayette and Loyola but earned the No. 7 seed on a tiebreaker based on being 3-1 against the other two teams.
• Murphy Burnatowski leads Colgate with 14.5 points per game and Austin Tillotson is second at 13.5 points per game and first in assists at 4.5 a game.
• Ethan Jacobs averages 11.7 points and Damon Sherman-Newsome averages 11.2.
• Colgate ranks fourth in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage and first in the Patriot league at .403.
• Colgate is also 13th in the NCAA and second in the Patriot League in field goal percentage at .489.

Series History vs. Colgate
• Navy and Colgate split the season series with each team winning on its home court.
• Colgate defeated Navy in Hamilton on Jan. 18, 63-41, and Navy won in Annapolis on Feb. 15, 71-61.
• Colgate leads the all-time series against Navy, 30-25.
• Navy is 2-3 against Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament and 0-2 in games played in Hamilton, N.Y.
• The two teams last met in the tournament in 2009 when No. 6 Colgate upset No. 3 Navy, 64-59 in overtime.
• Colgate and Navy played for the Patriot League Championship in back-to-back years in 1994 and 1995. Navy won in 1994 and Colgate won in 1995.

Looking Ahead
• If Navy defeats Colgate on Monday, it will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal game at No. 2 American.
• American earned the No. 2 seed with its 13-4 conference record. American swept the season series against Navy.
