ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Senior guard Kaleo Kina has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 13 First Team, the association announced recently. Kina led the Mids to a 19-11 overall record and was joined on the squad by Cornell's Ryan Wittman, Harvard's Jeremy Lin, American's Garrison Carr and Dartmouth's Alex Barnett. District 13 is comprised of teams from the Patriot League, the Ivy League and Division I Independents.
The 6-4 guard from Phoenix, Ariz., who was selected as a first-team All-Patriot League honoree, had an outstanding senior season, leading the Mids to a third-place Patriot League finish and a 19-11 overall mark. He is the only player in school history to record 500 points, 150 rebounds and 100 assists in a season. He is one of 15 players nationally to reach those three marks, joining such stars as Tennessee-Martin's Lester Hudson, Arizona State's James Harden, Florida's Nick Calathes, Michigan's Manny Harris, Memphis' Tyreke Evans, Maryland's Greivis Vazquez and Tennessee's Tyler Smith as members of that exclusive company. Lastly, he is one of seven players nationally (Hudson, Harden, VMI's Travis Holmes, Duquesne's Aaron Jackson, Coppin State's Tywain McKee and USF's Dominique Jones) to average 18.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 3.5 apg, and the first player in Navy history to average 15.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 3.0 apg.
Kina scored 1,528 career points (7th), grabbed 472 career rebounds, dished out 392 assists (6th) and grabbed 183 career steals (3rd), while playing in all 118 games, the fifth most in school history, with 105 starts, thed for the second most ever at Navy. He scored in double figure 27 times this year and had 78 career double-figure efforts, including a career-high 30 points earlier this year in a win over Radford. Kina had 11 games of 20 or more points this year. He is the only player in school history with 1,500 career points and 300 career assists and is one of two Patriot Leaguers (Lafayette's Brian Ehlers) to record 1,500 points, 300 rebounds, 300 assists and 150 steals in a career.
Kina became Navy's first NABC All-District honoree since Chris Williams in 2001 (second team) and earned Navy's first NABC All-District first-team accolade since David Robinson in 1987. He joins just five player previous Navy players (John Clune in 1954, Don Lange in 1954, Dave Smalley in 1956, Kevin Sinnett in 1979 and David Robinson in 1985, 1986 and 1987) to become NABC first-team All-District award winners.
