BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Navy men's basketball standout Michael Cunningham (San Antonio, Texas) was named the 2001 Patriot League Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year Friday afternoon.

Cunningham, a senior quantitative economics major, owns a 3.71 grade-point average and has maintained the highest GPA on the team all four years at the Academy. He and fellow senior Robert Reeder were also honored earlier in the spring as members of the 2000-01 Verizon Academic All-District 2 University Division Basketball Team Friday.

Cunningham capped off his career by earning Patriot League All-Tournament recognition in leading the Mids to their second-consecutive Patriot League Championship Game. The three-year letterwinner led Navy in blocks (62) and field goal percentage (.550), while posting the third-most rebounds (4.7 rpg) and added 4.9 points per game.

With his 62 blocks, he etched his name in the school record book for the eighth-most single-season rejections, while his 107-career blocks is listed as fifth in Naval Academy history.

Cunningham is the fourth Navy player to be named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the 11-year history of the league. Previous Midshipmen to win the award include John Haase in 1992, Alex Kohnen in 1994 and Wes Cooper in 1995. Navy is the only league member to have four different players win the Patriot League Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year Award.
