Patriot League Announces 2013-14 Men's Basketball Schedule
The Navy men's basketball team will open the 2013-14 Patriot League season at league newcomer Loyola, Md.
June 12, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- With the additions of Boston University and Loyola, Md., on July 1, the Patriot League released the 2013-14 and 2014-15 men's basketball schedules today. The 10-team league will play an 18-game league schedule beginning on January 2, 2014.
Two of Navy's first three games in the newly-expanded Patriot League will come against the two new league squads. Navy opens the league season on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, with a road game at Loyola, Md., and then after hosting 2013 Patriot League Tournament runner-up Lafayette on January 5, the Midshipmen head to Boston to face the Terriers on January 7. It will be just the third meeting all-time against the Terriers and the first since the 1988-89 season.
Army and Navy meet for the 119th time in series history on January 11, when the Black Knights visit Annapolis. The game at Alumni Hall has sold out six straight years and it kicks off a four-out-of-five-game homestand as 2013 champion Bucknell pays a visit to Alumni Hall on Wednesday, January 15. It marks the first time in regular-season play that Navy and Bucknell are scheduled to play midweek since a Feb. 6, 2002, meeting in Lewisburg.
After a trip to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Colgate on January 18, Navy returns home for two more games against Lehigh (Jan. 22) and Holy Cross (Jan. 25), both at Alumni Hall. This will be the first regular-seson weekend game against Holy Cross since the current Wednesday-Saturday schedule was finalized before the 2005-06 season.
Navy will close out the first half of league play on Wednesday, January 29, at American. With the addition of Boston U. and Loyola, Md., there will be no bye week built into the league schedule, as the Midshipmen tip off the second half of league play just three days later with a contest at Lafayette on February 1.
Boston U. returns a trip to Annapolis for the first time in series history on February 5, then Navy heads to West Point in search of a Star on February 8. The two rivals split last year's series, with both squads winning on each other's home court.
Navy will then travel to Bucknell (Feb. 12), host Colgate (Feb. 15), travel to Lehigh (Feb. 19) and Holy Cross (Feb. 22) to close out a grueling four-road-game-in-five-game span and complete its Patriot League road slate. The Midshipmen end the league season by hosting American (Feb. 26) and Loyola (March 1).
All 10 teams qualify for the postseason tournament, but tournament dates and times have not been finalized. All dates are subject to change by agreement of the participating schools or for television broadcasts, which will likely be released in September.
The schedule is reversed for the 2014-15 season, with Navy opening Dec. 31, 2014 by hosting Loyola, Md.
Navy will return 12 letterwinners and all five starters for the 2013-14 campaign.
