Navy senior men's basketball player Greg Sprink
has been named to the preseason first-team All-Patriot League by several publications, including Sporting News, Athlon's
. Earlier in the month, he was selected by Patriot League coaches and sports information directors as a preseason first-team All-Patriot League selection, the first such honor for a Navy men's basketball player since Chris Williams in 2000-01.
Sprink, a 6-5, 220-pound forward from Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., became the first Navy player to lead the league in scoring, averaging 16.9 ppg (17.9 ppg in the Patriot League) in all games played. He currently ranks 16th on the school's career scoring list (1,132 points) and ranks in the top 10 in six other career categories. He is on pace to become just the third player in school history to score 1,000 points, grab 500 rebounds and dish out 200 assists in a career, joining past Navy greats Vernon Butler (1983-86) and Kevin Sinnett (1976-79). Sprink will also likely become the school record-holder in nearly every category in Patriot League games.
Meanwhile, the Blue Ribbon Yearbook has given Navy's backcourt a grade of B+, the highest ranking dealt out among all eight Patriot League backcourts (along with Bucknell). The Mids return six of seven backcourt players that saw significant action last year, and brought in a pair of skilled freshmen in Greg Brown (Waldorf, Md.) and Romeo Garcia (Cypress, Texas).
Navy opens the season on Nov. 9, at Longwood in Farmville, Va., with tip time slated for 7:30 pm. The Mids' home opener will be Nov. 14, against Northeast Conference preseason favorite Robert Morris. For ticket information, please call 1-800-US4-NAVY.
