Nov. 23, 2010
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy basketball player J.J. Avila was named the Patriot League / Anaconda men's basketball Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. Avila becomes the first Navy freshman since Romeo Garcia took home the honors on Feb. 25, 2008, to earn PL Rookie of the Week honors.
Avila, a 6-7 forward from McAllen, Texas, filled the stat sheet in Navy's four games last week, averaging 6.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals and one block in four contests. His best performance came in Navy's 74-62 victory over Neumann last Tuesday night, as Avila totaled six points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals in the victory. Avila's 10 rebounds were the most for a Navy freshman since Garcia had 10 boards against Longwood on Jan. 5, 2008, while his six assists were the most for a plebe since Kaleo Kina had seven against Lafayette on Jan. 11, 2006.
Then at the 2KSports Classic in Irvine, Calif., over the weekend, Avila managed five points and eight rebounds in a 75-60 loss to UC Irvine on Friday, 10 points and three boards in Saturday's 80-65 defeat to Louisiana Tech, and four points with six rebounds and three steals in a 75-70 loss to Seattle on Sunday. The weekly honor is the first this season for a Navy basketball player.
Avila currently ranks first on the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg), second in assists (11) and blocks (4), fourth in steals (7) and sixth in scoring (5.3 ppg). He is also a perfect 5-of-5 (1.000) from the free throw line so far this year.
Avila and the Mids, 1-5 overall this year, travel to Towson for a Wednesday (Nov. 24) night contest beginning at 7:00 pm.
