ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman Tilman Dunbar was named the Patriot League / Anaconda Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for his role in helping Navy to a split on the road last week.

It marks the second straight week a Navy freshman has won Rookie of the Week awards as Kendall Knorr (Concord, N.C.) won the accolade on December 3.

Dunbar, a 5-10 freshman point guard from Woodbridge, Va., had two sensational performances last week. In Navy's 85-66 win over Monmouth, Dunbar scored a career-high 20 points with four rebounds and seven assists on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. With Navy trailing at the half, 37-32, Dunbar would score 16 of his 20 points in the second half and dish out five of his seven assists after the break to help Navy to its largest road victory in almost five years. He became the first freshman in school history to score 20 points with at leat four rebounds and seven assists in a game and the first Navy player in any class to do so since Greg Sprink in January 2006. The seven assists tied for the ninth most in school history by a freshman.

He then added 18 points with five assists in a 72-65 setback to Mount St. Mary's on Friday night. Dunbar went 7-of-10 from the field again and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

For the week, Dunbar averaged 19.0 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 14-of-20 (.700) from the field and 10-of-13 (.769) from the free throw line.

On the season, Dunbar leads the team in scoring (10.5 ppg) while leading the Patriot League (5.5 apg) in assists. He ranks second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (60 assists, 32 turnovers, 1.88 ratio), while ranking second nationally among freshmen in assists (5.5 apg) behind Texas' Javan Felix, Dunbar is one of five freshmen nationally to average at least 10.0 ppg and 5.0 apg.

He recently became the eighth freshman in school history to score 100 points with 60 assists in a season, doing so in just his 11th game. Dunbar already ranks ninth on the Navy single-season assists list by a freshman with 60 helpers.

Dunbar and his teammates will host Bryant tonight (Monday, Dec. 10) at 7:00 PM at Alumni Hall. Tickets are available at the Alumni Hall entrance.
