Navy's Colbert Named Patriot League Basketball Rookie of the Week
Dec. 14, 2005
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Patriot League office has named Navy guard Clif Colbert (Grand Prairie, Texas) the Patriot League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week. Colbert averaged 14.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and led the Midshipmen to a pair of wins last week.
"Clif has worked extremely hard in practice," said second-year Navy head coach Billy Lange. "The up-side about Clif is that he hasn't even scratched the surface of the player he can develop in to. It's great for a player in our program to be recognized for his contributions and Clif was deserving of this honor."
Colbert was asked to take over the starting point guard position three games ago after Corey Johnson (Anderson, Ind.) suffered a knee injury Nov. 27 against Air Force. Colbert led the Midshipmen to their first victory of the season, an 82-73 win over Howard, last Monday at the BB&T Classic. The newcomer paced the Mids with 16 points, while grabbing a career-high three steals in the win. Three days later, Colbert dumped in 12 points and pulled down five boards in Navy's 26-point road victory over Morgan State.
Colbert played a combined 13 minutes in the first three games of the season which featured just a field goal. Since taking over the starting job Dec. 2 at Penn, the first-year player has averaged better than 30 minutes per game, while scoring 16.7 points and grabbing 4.7 rebounds per game. He has scored in double digits in each of his three starts and is the only Navy play to break the 20-point barrier this season, notching a career-high 22 at Penn in his first-collegiate start.
The Class of '09, made up of six players, has scored 158 of Navy's 389 points this winter (.406) and is averaging 26.3 points per game.
The Midshipmen will be back in action Sunday when they play host to Washington (Md.) College at 3 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
