ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's basketball point guard Tilman Dunbar was selected as the Patriot League / Anaconda Rookie of the Week for the second straight time after leading the Midshipmen to a 69-59 win over Bryant last Monday.
A Navy player has now won the award for three straight weeks. Kendall Knorr (Concord, N.C.) was the recipient on Dec. 3, while Dunbar earned the accolade on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.
Dunbar, a freshman from Woodbridge, Va., and Paul VI Catholic High School, recorded his second double-double of the season with a 13-point, 10-assist, three-rebound performance (5-of-8 FGs) in the victory over Bryant. Dunbar played the last seven minutes with four fouls, but helped fuel an 18-7 run over that span to erase a one-point deficit into a 10-point victory over the Bulldogs, which entered the contest as winners of five of their last six games with victories over Boston College, Army, Brown, New Hampshire and Binghamton.
Dunbar is on a tear over the last three games, averaging 17.0 points per game and 7.3 assists per game while shooting 19-of-28 (.679) from the field in that span. The double-double against Bryant was his second of the season as he also recorded one against Binghamton (16 points, 11 assists).
Dunbar leads the Patriot League and the nation's freshmen in assists per game (5.83) while averaging a team-best 10.7 points per game. He is second in the league with a 1.79 assist-to-turnover ratio (70-to-39) and is 12th in the league in field goal percentage (.462).
He already ranks ninth on the Navy freshman single-season assists list (70) and is one of eight freshmen in school history with 125 points and 70 assists, reaching the feat in just 12 games while ranking ninth among Navy freshmen all-time in double-doubles (2). Dunbar is one of four freshmen nationally (Xavier's Semaj Christon, Northwestern State's Jalan West and Arizona State's Jahii Carson) to average 10.0 ppg, 5.0 apg and shoot over 45.0 percent from the field.
He ranks 30th in the country among all players in assists (5.8 apg), 108th in double-doubles (2) and 147th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.79).
Navy returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 22) against Northern Kentucky following an 11-day break for final exams. Action gets underway from Annapolis' Alumni Hall, beginning at 2:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online at www.NavySports.com, by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the Alumni Hall ticket window prior to the contest.
