Dec. 20, 2010

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., announced today the candidates for the 2011 Bob Cousy Award. The annual award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes college basketball's top point guard. A total of 66 players, including Navy senior point guard O.J. Avworo (Houston, Texas) have been nominated for the 2011 award.

Avworo was the only Patriot League player on the 66-man list that will be narrowed down to 20 by January 3rd, 10 by February 3rd and a final five by March 3rd.

Avworo, this year's team captain, is one of the leading returning assist men in the country after ranking 14th in the country a year ago in assists per game (5.83). During Patriot League play last year, Avworo averaged 10.2 ppg and 6.4 apg, a number that ranked seventh among all players nationally in assists per game during conference play only. His 169 assists last year were the sixth most in a season in school history and he had six games with 10 or more helpers a year ago, just three shy of Doug Wojcik's school-record nine during the 1986 season.

He was named the Top Playmaker in the league by Lindy's Magazine and was previously a Patriot League Player of the Week on Feb. 8, 2010. So far this year, Avworo is averaging 7.4 ppg, 3.5 apg, 2.8 rpg and 1.6 spg in helping Navy overcome a slow start en route to its current 4-8 record, going 3-3 in its last six games. Over the last five outings, Avworo is averaging 9.0 ppg and 4.0 apg. He is also shooting 67.2 percent from the free throw line after shooting 57.1 percent in his previous two years at Navy.

For his career, Avworo ranks 10th on the career assists list with 320 and his 4.51 assist per game average at Navy ranks fifth best in school history. He is also closing in on the 500-point mark at Navy, averaging 6.8 ppg in 71 games at Navy for 481 career points.

Avworo and his teammates will host Elon on Wednesday, Dec. 22, in Navy's final contest before Christmas, beginning at 7:00 pm in Alumni Hall. It will be just Navy's third home game all season. A family of four can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for just $24, available at the Alumni Hall Box Office prior to the contest.
