ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- For the third straight week, Navy freshman guard Tilman Dunbar was named the Patriot League / Anaconda Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week.
It marks the fourth straight week a Navy freshman has won Rookie of the Week awards as Kendall Knorr (Concord, N.C.) won the accolade on December 3, followed by the three straight weekly awards won by Dunbar.
Dunbar, a 5-10 freshman point guard from Woodbridge, Va., tallied a team-best 12 points and two assists in last week's contest against Northern Kentucky. He has led the team in scoring five times this year while pacing the squad in assists for the sixth consecutive game.
Dunbar leads the team in scoring (10.8 ppg) and leads the Patriot League in assists (5.5 apg) while shooting almost 45.0 percent from the field. He ranks second nationally among freshmen in assists (behind Texas' Javan Felix) and is one of five freshmen nationally to average at least 10.0 points per game and 5.0 assists per game. His 72 assists are already the ninth most by a freshman in school history and he is one of seven Navy freshmen in school history to score 140 points with 70 assists, doing so in just 13 games.
Dunbar joins Michael Heary and J.J. Avila as the only Navy players in school history to win three straight Rookie of the Week awards. He is one of 12 players all-time in the Patriot League to do so.
Dunbar and his teammates host Albany, which is ranked 24th in the most-recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, tonight (Friday) at Alumni Hall, beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available at the Alumni Hall entrance.
