Heavyweight Rowing Opens Season with Strong Showing Against Princeton

Navy won the third and fourth varsity competitions against Princeton on Saturday

April 5, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team came out in its season-opening meet on the Severn River and went head-to-head with the fourth-ranked team in the nation, Princeton, splitting the four-race lineup. The 12th-ranked Mids won the third and fourth varsity events, but came up short in the varsity eight and second varsity eight by a combined 1.6 seconds.

"Today was a good first step for us," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "We showed the depth of our program but also rowed stroke-for-stroke with one of the top teams in the country. I was very proud of our effort and intensity."

The racing in the 83rd meeting for the Navy-Princeton Cup began early on the Severn River as the varsity eight crews competed in tight action before a late sprint to the line by the Tigers gave Princeton the 1.4-second win, 6:06.2 - 6:07.6.

The next event with the second varsity eight crews was even closer as the photo finish needed a review to declare a winner. The Tigers pulled out the 0.2-second victory with a result of 6:09.3 versus 6:09.5 for the Mids.

Tight competition continued into the third varsity race with Navy earning its first win of the day with a 6:20.2 final time. Princeton's 3V boat clocked in 6:22.4, while Navy's first freshmen boat finished at 6:29.6.

The rowing on Saturday concluded with the Mids taking the top two spots in the fourth varsity race. Navy's 4V boat completed the 2000-meter course in a time of 6:22.4, 8.3 seconds ahead of the team's 5V boat (6:30.7). Princeton's 4V crew finished with a 6:32.3 time.

"We are a very young team," said Friedrich. "They learned a lot about themselves today and what to work on to get faster."

Navy will be back in action next weekend at the George Washington Invitational. The two-day event begins on Friday afternoon before concluding on Saturday with a day-long schedule of races.
