WASHINGTON, D.C. - Highlighted by the varsity eight crew's two wins, the Navy heavyweight rowing team went a combined 8-0 against Holy Cross and Georgetown on Saturday to take home its second straight George Washington Invitational title.

"I was very proud of the team today," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "Overall, I think we made a lot of people happy with their performances this weekend - we had wonderful support here today."

The Mids cruised to wins in all four races against Holy Cross in their first competitions of the day on the Potomac River. Both of the Navy's first and second freshman crews topped the Crusaders with times of 5:42.4 and 5:53, respectively.

The third varsity topped Holy Cross by 12 seconds with a time of 5:56, while the second varsity followed in its race with a time of 5:48.3 to win by 11 seconds.

The varsity eight closed the morning session in notable fashion as they defeated Holy Cross, 5:33.4-5:50.9.

Navy's freshman boats continued to impress in the afternoon against Georgetown. The second freshman won with a time of 5:57.5 - defeating the Hoyas by over 40 seconds. The first freshman crew followed with the second fastest overall time of the afternoon, defeating Georgetown 5:36.7-5:54.6.

"Our plebes are doing a great job," said Clothier. "As impressed as I am with our varsity, I'm equally as impressed as with our freshmen."

The Mids second and third varsity boats both defeated Georgetown, with the second varsity clocking a winning time of 5:39.6.

The varsity eight ended the day's competition with the fastest time of the day. The Mids posted a 5:31.6 to defeat Georgetown by nine seconds.

"It was a pretty solid day - all our crews did really well and the varsity did great in their last race," said Clothier. "That was a very nice win, but we realize it's another step along the way in the spring regatta season."

Navy will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., next Saturday to take on the Orange and Cornell.
