ITHACA, N.Y. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team was tripped up in its title defense of the Goes Trophy in the varsity eight race on Saturday, but came away with three wins as a program in a three team meet at the Cayuga Lake Inlet. Overall, Navy won three of the five races that were held on Saturday versus Cornell and Syracuse.

In the premier match for the Goes Trophy, Navy's varsity eight crew broke out to an early lead, but fell victim to a late push by Cornell in the second half to give the Big Red the trophy for the first time in three years after the Mids were victorious in 2012 and 2013. Cornell won the V8 race with a time of 6:01.7, 3.3 seconds ahead of Navy (6:05.0). Syracuse rounded out the field with a time of 6:08.3.

"The varsity had a solid lead for the first 1000 meters, when Cornell took advantage of the inside turn in lane 1," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "We had the outside of the first turn in lane 3 and our guys fought hard to hold Cornell in the third 500. Cornell had a strong second half. I give those guys a lot of credit."

After an initial setback, the Mids came out strong in the second, third and fourth varsity races with victories in each. Navy took the 2V8 event with a time of 6:07.1, five seconds ahead of the second place finishing Cornell crew, while the 3V8 Navy boat won by 2.9 seconds at 6:25.9. The 4V8 team posted Navy's largest margin of victory on the day with an 11.3-second win over Syracuse, 6:21.9 to 6:33.2.

In the freshmen eight race, Cornell defeated Navy, 6:19.2 to 6:29.2.

"Our second, third, and fourth varsities had great starts and slowly pulled away throughout the race," said Friedrich.  "On a whole, I was proud of the team today and I know our varsity and plebe boats will pick up speed."

Navy will be back in action next Saturday in Philadelphia for competition on the Schuykill River versus Harvard and Penn.
