WORCESTER, Mass. - The Navy heavyweight varsity eight took the top spot in the petite final, placing seventh overall at the EARC Sprints on Sunday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. Overall, Navy had four boats compete in grand final races, including the third varsity, which came away with a medal by placing third.

As a team, Navy finished eighth in the Rowe Cup standings.

"Obviously our goal was to get all of our boats into the grand finals," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "I thought the varsity did a great job in the petite final. They really poured their hearts into that race."

The varsity eight competed in the final heat of the morning and placed third behind Brown and Princeton, respectively, with a time of 6:14.5. In the petite final, Navy came out strong and never trailed the entire 2,000 meters. The Mids posted a time of 6:07.2, topping second-place Cornell by over 3 seconds.

"I thought the varsity had a tough heat this morning against two really fast crews in Brown and Princeton," said Friedrich. "They raced well, but not good enough to qualify for the grand final. They had a great race in the petite final and it will really help motivate us to train hard these next two weeks to get ready for the IRA."

The third varsity eight had the highest finish of any Navy crew on Sunday, placing third in the grand final. The Mids had the third-fastest time of any crew in the heat races and just outstretched Northeastern, 6:08.04-6:08.64, to win its heat. In the grand final, Navy battled with Boston University and Princeton for the second, third and fourth spots. BU was able to hold off the Mids by 2 seconds for second place, while Navy's 6:27.5 was 1.4 seconds better than Princeton.

"They had a great race, it was good to see," said Friedrich.

The second varsity took fourth in its heat with a time of 6:23.3. In the petite final, the Mids took fifth with a time of 6:38.4, which was less than 2 seconds behind fourth-place Penn.

For the third consecutive year, Navy's freshman crew advanced to the grand final by way of a third place finish in its heat race. In the final, the Mids placed sixth with a time of 6:40.7.

"I give a lot of credit to our freshmen, they really worked hard to gain some speed and get to the grand final," said Friedrich. "I thought they performed very well."

The second freshman eight took second behind Wisconsin in its only race of the afternoon, clocking a 6:50.1

The fourth varsity eight also had just one race and it placed third behind Princeton (6:39.1) and Harvard (6:42.3), respectively, with a 6:46.9.

Navy will return on action in its final regatta of the year, the IRA National Championships, May 31-June 2 in Sacramento, Calif.
