Navy Heavyweight Crew Begins Competition at IRA National Championship

June 1, 2018

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The 2018 IRA National Championship Regatta got underway for the Navy heavyweight crew program on Friday with four boats racing in heat and repechage action on Mercer Lake. Competitive throughout the day, the Mids barely missed qualifying for A/B Semifinals with its first, second and third varsity eight, and first varsity four boats.

“After some tough morning heats, I thought all of our boats raced well in the afternoon,” remarked head coach Rob Friedrich. “Each crew raced their hearts out and missed qualifying for the A/B semis by one spot each.

“We posted some fast times in the reps and I think that was more indicative of our speed. There is only one senior rower in our top-two boats, so these guys are just starting to show good speed and the learning curve is steep. We are looking forward to the next two days and finishing higher than our seeds.”

The Mids’ first varsity eight got the program’s action going on Friday with racing in the first heat. Taking on a field of six boats, Navy saw Washington (5:43.157) and Syracuse (5:47.723) earn the heat’s two automatic A/B Semifinal advancement positions. The Mids settled into a fourth place finish at 5:59.252. A few hours later in the second V8 repechage, Navy went head-to-head with Stanford for the top spot and last A/B Semifinal qualifying berth. The Cardinal held off the Mids with a final decision of 5:37.749 to 5:40.202. Navy will now race on Saturday in C/D Semifinal 4 at 9:24 a.m.

Navy’s second varsity eight shared a similar track on Friday as the Mids finished in fourth place in the heat with a 5:59.079 time. In the afternoon repechage, Navy’s stiffest competition came from Syracuse. Rivals from the annual Goes Trophy meet, the Orange defeated the Mids by 3.107 seconds at 5:46.023 to 5:49.130 to collect the A/B Semifinal qualifying spot. Navy’s next action will come in C/D Semifinal 4 on Saturday at 9:42 a.m.

The final eight-man crew to compete for Navy on Friday was the Mids’ third varsity eight. After clocking in at 6:06.969 to place fourth in the morning’s heat race, Navy’s 3V8 came back in the afternoon repechage and gutted out a 6:00.591 result. Focused on capturing one of two A/B Semifinal bids in the repechage, Navy was in the top-three mix throughout, but fell victim to slightly faster times by Syracuse and Brown, who recorded times of 5:55.498 and 5:57.863, respectively. The Mids’ 3V8 will be off tomorrow and complete their championship run on Sunday in the Third Level Final at 9:40 a.m.

Navy’s varsity four boat also saw action in two races on Friday. In both of its heat and repechage competitions, the game Mids were one spot out of A/B Semifinal qualification. In the morning heat where only one spot was up for grabs, Navy was edged out by Dartmouth by 2.331 seconds at 6:34.841 to 6:37.172. The Mids bested four other teams in the six-boat heat. Heading back on the water a few hours later for the repechage, Navy was one of three teams to finish within two seconds of each other atop the standings. While Holy Cross came in first at 6:36.203, Navy and Northeastern were separated by just over one second as the Huskies posted a time of 6:37.078, ahead the Mids’ 6:38.189. Navy’s V4 will be back in action on Saturday with C/D Semifinal 3 at 10:09 a.m.
