Heavyweight Rowing Begins Racing at IRA National Championship

June 2, 2017

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Navy heavyweight rowing team started competition at the 2017 IRA National Championship on Friday with four teams racing at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California. The Mids’ 3V8 and V4 teams headlined the program’s effort with top two results in their respective heat races. Navy’s first and second varsity boats both competed twice on Friday as the boats raced in heat and repechage events.

The first varsity eight crew raced in top-level heat and repechage competitions with a 5:50.102 time in heat number one. With Washington, Brown and Northeastern pulling away and advancing with times between 5:36.892 and 5:43.716, the Mids pulled back in preparation for the afternoon repechage. Coming back a few hours later in a four-team repechage, Navy went head-to-head with a game Dartmouth crew, but unfortunately came up 0.538 seconds at 5:48.309 to 5:48.847. The Mids will race again in the C/D Semifinal on Saturday at 12:55 p.m. ET

"Even with a tough heat and a tough rep today, I thought our guys performed better than we have all year,” said head coach Rob Friedrich. “We did not have a great start in the rep but we kept close to a very fast Dartmouth crew and almost rowed them down in the last 300 meters. I think we showed a lot of guts and gained the respect of many of our competitors today."

The second varsity eight boat also ran into some fast teams in heat and repechage racing as the Mids initially clocked in at a 5:50.102 that was good for fourth of six teams. In the afternoon repechage, Navy raced versus Penn at the head of the four-team field. At the completion of the 2,000-meter course, the Quakers won the heat with a time of 6:04.123, while the Mids fell off the pace at 6:11.094 to finish in second place. Navy’s 2V8 will next be in action on Saturday in the C/D Semifinal at 1:35 p.m. ET.

"Our 2V had a good first 1000 meters against a resurgent Penn crew but couldn't hold them in the second half of the race,” remarked Friedrich. “They have a lot to prove tomorrow and I know they will rise to the challenge for the last two days of racing."

The Mids’ third varsity eight team had a strong effort and came in runner-up to the top-seeded Washington Huskies. Putting down the fourth fastest heat time of the morning, Navy posted a 5:49.419 time, while Washington won the heat at 5:47.422. The Mids will advance to Saturday’s A/B Semifinal at 2:05 p.m. ET.

"Our 3V raced well today, upsetting their seed and pushing Washington all the way to the finish,” said Friedrich. “This crew has shown great development over IRA training. The crew is all freshmen and sophomores and they have really taken advantage of the extra training since school ended. These guys are motivated to have an even better race in the Semifinals tomorrow."

Navy’s varsity four boat repeated its third varsity eight team’s result with a direct-to-semifinal result on Friday. The Mids led wire-to-wire over a five-team field of Boston University, Marist, Brown and Dartmouth. Navy eased into the finish line 3.437 seconds ahead of the pack at 6:30.960. The first A/B Semifinal on Saturday is slated for 2:35 p.m. ET.

"We knew our four was strong, but they really impressed us today posting the third fastest time of all the heats,” exclaimed Friedrich. “We had a large selection camp for the four, comprised of all our fourth and fifth varsity athletes. So, this four represents all the guys we had to leave at home. We will have to put together an even faster race tomorrow if we want to make that grand final."

Semifinal action for Navy continues on Saturday afternoon.
