Mids Win Two of Three Varsity Races at Navy Day Regatta
Oct. 16, 2006
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy crew programs saw their respective varsity boats win a pair of races and place second by two-tenths of a second in the third at the Navy Day Regatta, held this past Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The regatta featured head racing, with boats leaving the starting line individually and racing single file through the 2.5-mile course. Navy's varsity heavyweight boat posted a time of 13:08.20 to win its race for the fourth-straight year. The Mids outdistanced second-place Army by 14 seconds. In addition to the victory by the varsity crew, the heavyweight team also won the college four race, placed second in the junior varsity eight race and third in the club four race. "We had several good races today," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. The lightweight team also claimed the varsity title for the fourth year in a row, with the Mids recording a time of 13:47.20 to win the race by 13 seconds. Additional Navy entries placed third in the varsity race, as well as both fourth and fifth in the freshman race. "I am very proud of our varsity boats for winning the race and placing third," said Navy lightweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "Our freshman, most of whom have never rowed before, also put together very good rows. This was a great building race for the remainder of the fall season." Navy's women's team saw its three-year winning streak come to an end in the varsity race as Penn edged the Mids by just two-tenths of a second. The Quakers crossed the finish line in a time of 14:54.90, while Navy's entry completed the course in a clocking of 14:55.10. The Mids also placed third and fifth in the junior varsity race, sixth and 13th in the freshman eight race and 12th in the college four contest. "Our varsity put together a very solid row," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "The kids felt good about it and so do I. Our freshman also had a good showing. This was their first race and they were going up against more experienced and recruited rowers. They never really panicked as you sometimes see in a first race."
The Navy programs will next be in competition Sunday when the Mids take part in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Navy Heavyweight Team Results Navy Lightweight Team Results Navy Women's Team Results |
