Oct. 18, 2009
BOSTON - The Navy men's crew teams finished among the top-10 U.S. Collegiate programs in each of its four races at the Head of the Charles Regatta on a cold and snowy Sunday afternoon. Sunday's races were conducted with temperatures in the mid 30s and wind chills hovering around 20 degrees with snow falling throughout the day. In the heavyweight competition, Navy's eight-oared boat finished 16th out of 37 boats - sixth among U.S. colleges - with a time of 15:23.041 over the three-mile, upstream course. The fours crew with coxswain completed the race in 17:39.877 to place 12th overall and seventh among U.S. collegiate boats. "I thought our crews did a pretty good job in their first major competition," stated Navy men's heavyweight crew head coach Rick Clothier. "This was one of the toughest fields ever in my 35 years rowing at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Some of the world's best rowers took part in the championship eight race. For a young crew, I thought we held our own pretty well and am looking forward to next week at the Princeton Chase." Navy's lightweight team enjoyed a successful day on the Charles River, highlighted by a 15:37.129 clocking in the eight-man race with coxswain to place third out of 21 boats and second among U.S. colleges. In the lightweight fours event, Navy finished fifth overall and second among U.S. collegiate competitors with a time of 17:39.264. The Navy heavyweight and lightweight teams will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J. NAVY RESULTS AT HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA
