PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy heavyweight and lightweight rowing programs competed in five events as part of the annual Princeton Chase on Sunday. Racing in a `head' style competition on the three-mile course on Lake Carnegie, the Mids were led by a third-place finish in the Freshmen Eight event by the heavyweight `A' boat.
Racing in the mixed Freshmen/Novice Eight race versus 28 opponents, the heavyweight freshmen Mids of boat `A' finished in third place with a time of 14:05.913. Navy's lightweight `A' boat's result of 14:30.667 was good for a 13th place ranking, while Navy's heavyweight `B' boat took 16th place with a time of 14:48.793.
"Our plebes showed the best today," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "They had a very strong race against some very good competition."
Navy's lightweight `A' boat earned the program's next best result on the day in the Lightweight Eight race with a seventh-place finish of 13:49.331. The lightweight `B' crew finished the course in time of 14:19.014, good for 14th place. Navy `C' and `D' finished 18th and 26th overall with times of 14:29.723 and 15:17.255, respectively. A total of 30 lightweight boats entered the event.
"The efforts of our varsity and freshmen in the 8+ racing today were solid and we're pleased with the results," said Navy lightweight head coach Shawn Bagnall.
Taking on a field of 54 boats, the Navy `A' crew earned a top-ten finish in the Heavyweight Four competition with a time of 15:21.979. The Mids had to settle for ninth place in the race after missing eighth place and the Northeastern `C' boat by 2.203 seconds. Navy `B' and Navy `C' finished in 14th and 16th place with times of 15:28.563 and 15:32.451, respectively. Navy `D' and its 31st-place finish of 16:00.018 rounded out Navy's entries in the event.
In the Heavyweight Eight race, Navy `A' had a strong result negated by a 30-second buoy penalty to increase its original seventh-place time of 13:23.286 to 17th place and 13:53.286. Navy `B' was the highest-finishing Midshipmen boat as they took 16th place with a time of 13:53.278, narrowly missing Columbia's 15th place `B' boat and its time of 13:53.023. Navy's `C', `E' and `D' boats finished with similar times of 14:05.787, 14:10.683 and 14:10.747, respectively. They ranked 30th, 34th and 35th overall out of 57 total entered crews.
"Posting the seventh-best time was a solid result, though with the penalty the overall outcome is a bit frustrating," said Friedrich. "I know the guys [`A' crew] aren't happy with the outcome. We had a solid pace, but there definitely is speed for them to gain. Though as a program in this race, five teams placing in the top 35 showed how strong our depth is."
The lightweight team was the last out of the water for Navy on Sunday as it had four entries in the afternoon's Lightweight Four event. Navy `A' finished in 13th place with a time of 15:49.810. The Mids' time came in just 1.206 seconds behind 12th-place Dartmouth `A.' Navy `B' and `D' finished back-to-back in 17th and 18th place with times of 16:01.221 and 16:02.301, respectively. Navy `C' rounded out the fleet with a 16:26.365 result, good for 22nd place. In total, 28 crews competed in the Lightweight Four race.
"The guys navigated some new lineups with short notice in the 4+ very well," said Bagnall.
Navy's lightweight program will conclude its fall season next Saturday, Nov. 2 in the Head of the Occoquan races in Woodbridge, Va.
The heavyweight team will be off from action for a week before concluding its fall slate with freshmen entries in the Rutgers Invite on Saturday, Nov. 9.
