All three of Navy's crew teams will take part in Saturday's George Washington Invitational, being held on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
LIGHTWEIGHT CREW Navy's lightweight crew team expects Georgetown to be one of its strongest competitors this weekend. The Hoyas' first varsity boat has already defeated Rutgers, Columbia and Princeton, who the Mids lost to last Saturday. In the first US ROWING National Coaches Poll of the season, released this week, Navy's first varsity boat is ranked sixth, while the Hoyas are ranked fourth.
"Georgetown's first varsity boat has had an incredible season, thus far," said Navy head coach Dale Hurley. "We expect them to be a very formidable opponent this weekend. We have learned a lot in the last few weeks, so I expect a very close race with Georgetown for the entire length of the course."
WOMEN'S CREW Navy's women's team will join some of the top teams in the Eastern Association Women's Rowing Conference at this weekend's invitational. In addition to Navy, EAWRC schools competing Saturday include Virginia, Columbia and the host Colonials.
"This weekend will be a benchmark for us," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "If we can do well, we will be in position to go to the NCAAs at the end of the year. If we don't do well, especially against our league opponents, we have a lot of work to do in a short period of time."
HEAVYWEIGHT CREW Navy's heavyweight crew team hopes to add to its long history of success at the George Washington Invitational this weekend. Navy's varsity boat won the regatta in 10-straight seasons until Georgetown and Temple won the event over the past two seasons.
The Midshipmen will square off against both the Hoyas and the Owls on Saturday, as well as against boats from Virginia, George Mason and William and Mary.
Navy's first varsity boat is ranked 15th in the first US ROWING National Coaches Poll of the season.
