Heavyweight Crew Places Third at GW Invite

Navy's heavyweight crew team placed third in the first varsity grand final of the George Washington Invitational, held Saturday in Washington, D.C.

It was a very close race between Navy, Temple and Georgetown, with the lead going back and forth throughout the first half of the race. With about 800 meters to go, Navy mishandled two or three strokes which cost the Mids valuable time. Navy was unable to recover from its delay and finished less than six seconds behind the winner, Temple, who crossed the finish line with a time of 5:11.00. The Owls narrowly edged the Hoyas, who finished with a time of 5:11.96, while Navy followed in third place with a time of 5:16.90.

In other races on the day, Navy posted solid victories in the second varsity and first and second novice competitions. Navy's second varsity shell won its race with a time of 5:24.64, nearly five seconds ahead of second-place Georgetown. Navy also had a nine-second advantage in winning the first novice race, while Navy's second novice boat posted a 12-second victory.

"It was a good day for us in that we had won all of our races until the last one, the first varsity race," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "In that race we had a poor start, but we were able to work through it and made our way back into the race until we had this one problem. Otherwise we moved very well throughout the rest of the course."

Navy will next be in action Saturday when it plays host to the Goes Cup on the Severn River.
