Heavyweight Crew Wins Pair of Trophies

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Navy won the varsity race over Cornell and Syracuse to win the Goes Trophy for the third-straight year, while also winning the overall points competition between the three schools to claim the Stagg Trophy for the first time in five years, Saturday morning on Cayuga Lake Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y.
"It was an exciting day of racing with a number of close finishes," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier.
In the varsity race, Navy quickly jumped out to about a one-half of a boat length lead after the opening 500 meters and held the lead throughout the remainder of the 2,000-meter course. The Mids crossed the finish line in a winning time of 5:49.4, with Cornell second at 5:51.8 and Syracuse third at 5:59.6.
It was Cornell who took the early lead in the second varsity race, but Navy fought back and took a slim lead at the midpoint of the contest. Navy would then hold off a late Cornell charge to post a two-second victory over the Big Red and an eight-second win over the Orange.
Navy also swept the two freshman races, with Navy winning by 10 seconds in the first freshman race and by four seconds in the second freshman contest. Navy held a lead of a boat length over both the Orange and the Big Red at the 1,000-meter mark of the first freshman race when the Syracuse boat interfered with the Cornell boat, causing both entries to stop. The Syracuse boat was eventually disqualified.
Navy's only blemish of the day came in the third varsity race where Cornell recorded a 6:06.7 to defeat the Mids by 2.2 seconds.
The Mids totaled 12 points to win the Stagg Trophy by three points over Cornell and by six points over Syracuse. The Big Red had won the trophy by one point over Navy in each of the past two seasons.
Navy will continue its season next Saturday when the Mids face Harvard and Penn for the Adams Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
