Harvard Retains Adams Cup Over Navy

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Harvard's heavyweight crew varsity boat topped Navy and Penn to win the Adams Cup race for the sixth-straight year, Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
"We started off very well and made up the stagger between the boats at the beginning of the race pretty quickly and took a little lead," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier of the varsity race. "We were about two seats up heading into the turn where we could have picked up more of a lead, but our coxswain had some trouble with the rudder at the turn and we spun to the side and almost came to a stop. We righted ourselves but had lost our rhythm at that point."
The Crimson, ranked first nationally in this week's U.S. Rowing national poll, won the race with a time of 5:42.1, with Navy second at 5:59.2 and Penn third at 6:04.1.
Navy did win the second varsity race, opening up an early lead and eventually winning by open water. The Midshipmen crossed the finish line in a winning time of 5:53.9, with the Crimson seven seconds behind Navy and the Quakers an additional six seconds back.
The victory marked the first time a Navy boat won a race on any level at the Adams Cup since winning both freshman races in 2002, as well as the first time either Navy varsity boat won an Adams Cup race since the Mids swept both varsity races in 1996.
"It was a very fine race by our junior varsity today," said Clothier.
Harvard would go on to win each of the three remaining races, with the Mids second in both the third varsity and second freshman races and third in the first freshman race.
The Mids will continue their season next Saturday when Navy races against Columbia on Mercer Lake in N.J.
