No. 9 Heavyweight Rowing Set to Take on No. 3 Harvard and No. 13 Penn for Adams Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The ninth-ranked Navy heavyweight rowing team be in action this Saturday versus a pair of top-15 teams on the Schuylkill River. The Midshipmen will be racing against the third-ranked Crimson of Harvard and 15th-ranked Quakers of Penn for the honor of taking home the Adams Cup. In the 77 prior Adams Cup competitions, Harvard holds a pronounced lead over Penn and Navy with 50 wins. The Quakers are second with 14 wins all-time, while the Mids have 13.
The schedule of events on Saturday includes three varsity and two freshmen races. The day begin at 9 a.m. with the second freshmen competition and goes through 10:50 when the Adams Cup will be on the line with the varsity eight race.
"This weekend will be another great test against top-ranked opponents in Harvard and Penn," said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. "Our young varsity is getting better each week, so we are excited to see what they can do on the Schuylkill this Saturday."
Last spring, Adams Cup racing was hosted by Harvard on the Charles River on April 27. The host Crimson earned their 12th straight title with a strong V8 result (5:39.7) over Penn (5:47.9) and Navy (5:49.6). After coming in second in the 2V8 race, the Mids swept the final two varsity races over the Crimson and Quakers with times of 6:03.6 and 6:08.1, respectively.
The Adams Cup: The Adams Cup is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Navy, Harvard and Penn. The trophy was placed into competition in 1933 and honors Charles Francis Adams, who was a Harvard graduate and former Secretary of the Navy.
