Harvard won the Adams Cup - awarded to the winner of the first varsity race between Navy, Harvard and Pennsylvania - with a time of 6:05.9. The Qaukers were two seconds behind the Crimson, while the Mids finished with a time of 6:21.9. Navy also placed third in the second varsity race, finishing 12 seconds behind the victorious Penn boat. The Mids fared better in the first two races of the day, the first and second novice races. Navy placed second in the first novice race with a time of 6:31.8, and second in the second novice race with a time of 6:38.5 The third varsity race was the race of the day. Penn narrowly defeated the Mids by one-half of a second, 6:34.2-6:34.7. Both teams finished ahead of Harvard, who crossed the line with a time of 6:36.5. "The third varsity race was one of the most exciting races I have ever seen," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We had the lead up until the 1800-meter mark (on a 2000-meter course) when Penn pulled ahead of us. We fought back, but Penn beat us by no more than a foot at the finish line." Navy will be back on the water competitively on May 13 when the Mids compete in the Eastern Sprint Championship. "We now have some time to do some experimenting with our boats and hopefully we can go into the Eastern Sprints in a little better shape than we are right now," said Clothier.
