Heavyweight Crew Claims Stevenson Trophy

MERCER COUNTY, N.J. -- The Navy men's heavyweight crew team put together a strong effort to top Columbia for the Maxwell Stephenson Trophy on Saturday. The Mids claimed all three races against the Lions, including the varsity eight race, which gave the Mids the Stephenson Trophy.

"It was a hard-fought, conservative effort by our varsity boat," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "It was good to row for this trophy as we haven't rowed for it for a few years."

Navy topped the Lions by over six seconds in the varsity eight boat, as the Mids posted a clocking of 6:02.5. Columbia was clocked in 6:08.7 and Navy's second varsity boat was timed in 6:11.7. The Lions surged out to an early lead by three seats a third of the way, but the Mids settled lower and leveled up the race about a minute in. By the 500-meter mark, Navy had taken the lead and 500 meters later, the Mids had put open water between them and the Lions' boat. Navy's second varsity boat, fell to Columbia by about three-fourths a length of the boat.

FIRST FRESHMAN / HWT EIGHT: Navy 6:23.3, Columbia 6:34.4
THIRD VARSITY / 2ND FRESHMEN EIGHT: Navy 3V 6:34.1, Navy 2F 6:39.5, Columbia 7:00.0
VARSITY / SECOND VARSITY EIGHT (MAXWELL STEPHENSON TROPHY): Navy 6:02.5, Columbia 6:08.7, Navy 6:11.7
