WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The eighth-ranked Navy heavyweight rowing team be facing off with a talented group of crews this Sunday at Mercer County Park. The Midshipmen will be in action versus No. 12 Columbia, No. 16 George Washington and R/V Florida Tech. The outcome of the Navy and Columbia racing will decide the winner of the Stevenson Trophy. The Mids have won the competition for the trophy each of the last three years and in 24 of 28 occasions, all-time.
The schedule of events on Sunday includes four varsity races and one for freshmen. The day is slated to begin at 12 p.m. with the fourth varsity competition. The four teams will race until 1:20 p.m. when the first varsity goes off.
“Having a four boat race on a buoyed race course, should be a great test for our championship events coming up,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “All of these programs have shown some great speed this year, so our guys will have to be at the top of their game. We've seen some solid improvements in all of our crews over the past two weeks and we hope to keep that going this weekend.”
In the spring season of 2013, the Mids, Lions and Colonials all did battle at Lake Carnegie on May 5. In a five-race slate, Navy secured victories in three races, including the first varsity competition for the Stevenson Trophy. In the V8 race, the Mids defeated the field with a time of 5:57.2; Columbia was second at 6:01.9 and George Washington third at 6:09.2.
The Stevenson Trophy: The Stevenson Trophy is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Navy and Columbia. The trophy was placed into competition in 1950 and honors Maxwell Stevenson, who was an early chairman of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association.
