Heavyweight Crew Closes Regular Season Friday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's heavyweight crew team will close its regular season Friday when the Midshipmen play host to Wisconsin starting at 5:30 a.m. on the Severn River. This will be Navy's final race prior to the June 3-5 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship.

The Mids are coming off a strong showing at the recent Eastern Sprints Championship, recording four top-six finishes and seeing the first varsity boat win its preliminary heat and place third in the grand final.

Navy and Wisconsin faced off in six races at the Eastern Sprints, with the Mids topping the Badgers in four of the contests. Navy's first varsity boat defeated Wisconsin's crew by six-tenths of a second in the preliminary heat and then by three seconds in the grand final, Navy's freshman boat finished three seconds in front of Wisconsin's entry in the petite final, and Navy's second freshman shell edged the Badger boat by three seconds in the trial heat.

Wisconsin boats defeated Navy by four seconds in the third varsity grand final and by three seconds in the second varsity grand final.

"Navy defeated Wisconsin in both its heat and in the final of the Eastern Sprints this past weekend, but the margin of victory was very close," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier.

Friday's winner of the first varsity race between the programs will be awarded the Buck Walsh Trophy. Navy's last win in the race came in 1996, with the victory concluding a nine-race winning streak in the series for the Mids. Last year's race was cancelled due to poor weather.
