Heavyweight Crew to Close Regular Season Sunday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's heavyweight crew team will close its regular season Sunday when the Midshipmen play host to Wisconsin starting at 6:15 a.m. on the Severn River. The race will be Navy's final one prior to the start of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship slated for June 2-4 in New Jersey.
"We annually have good races with Wisconsin and I would expect the same again this year," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier.
The winner of the varsity race will be awarded the Buck Walsh Trophy, with Navy looking to win the race for the second-straight year. The Mids topped the Badgers by six seconds last year to win the trophy and break a six-race losing streak to the Badgers. The two boats recently faced each other in a pair of races at the Eastern Sprints Championship, held May 15 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Navy defeated Wisconsin by 10 seconds in the trial heats and then again by seven seconds in the petite final.
The second varsity boats for each team also faced each other twice at the Eastern Sprints. After the two boats rowed to a tie during the trial heat, the Badgers edged the Mids by three-hundredth of a second in the grand final.
In addition to the Buck Walsh Trophy, the two teams will also vie for the Fisher Cup, which is presented to the team totaling the most points in the eight races.
