Navy Retains Buck Walsh Trophy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A strong start helped propel the Navy varsity boat to an eight-second victory over Wisconsin as part of the dual meet between the school's heavyweight crew programs, Sunday morning on the Severn River in Annapolis. As a result of the varsity victory, Navy retains the Buck Walsh Trophy for the second-straight year.
"We jumped out early and held nearly a boat length lead after 500 meters," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We then gained almost another boat length advantage after the next 500 meters. Wisconsin made some moves on us over the remainder of the course, but we were able to answer them."
The Mids completed the 2000-meter course in a time of 5:50.21, with Wisconsin finishing in 5:58.46.
The lone additional victory by the Mids in the eight-race meet came in the freshman race as Navy edged the Badgers by two seconds. Navy recorded a winning time of 5:55.42, with Wisconsin clocking in with a 5:57.53.
"It was a very fine race by our freshman boat," said Clothier. "We held an early lead after 500 meters, but Wisconsin came charging back at us. We kept our cool, stuck to our race plan and were able to hold them off for the win."
The Badgers won each of the remaining six races on the day to win the overall points competition, 27-18, and claim the Fisher Cup.
Navy will close its season this weekend when the Mids take part in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
