Crew Starts Fall Slate on Sunday at Head of the Potomac

Sept. 23, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight and lightweight rowing squads will begin their respective fall meet schedules with racing at the 2017 Head of the Potomac event on Sunday, Sept 24. The 37th installment of the regional racing competition will see Navy entrants in three different races, the Club Eight, Open Eight and Open Four. The Club Eight starts the day at 10:10 a.m. before the Open Eight goes off at 12:10 p.m. The Open Four race completes the single-file head rowing action at 1:45 p.m. Between the two Hubbard Hall squads, Navy will be represented with 18 boats in the event.

This will be the first competitive action for both programs that are coming off appearances in the IRA National Championships in June. The crews will navigate a 2.8-mile course from the Head of the Potomac and extending down the Potomac River along the Virginia shore across from the Georgetown/Foggy Bottom waterfront in Washington, D.C.

Last year at the 36th edition of the event, both the heavyweight and lightweight crews posted excellent results as the Navy heavies won the Open Eight with the top time of 13:40.6 to defeat Navy ‘C’ by 4.2 seconds. In the Open Four, Navy’s six boats completed the event in positions two through seven with the lightweight Navy 'B' boat placing second at 14:59.2.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Of note though, a portion of K St. NW between Wisconsin Ave. and Thomas Jefferson St. will be closed on Sunday due to an outside event.
