Navy Crew Collects Pair of Wins at Head of the Potomac

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The fall season began for the Navy rowing program on Sunday with the heavyweight and lightweight teams entering and racing 18 boats in the 37th edition of the Head of the Potomac event in Washington, D.C. The Hubbard Hall contingent competed in Club Eight, Open Eight and Open Four races on the 2.8-mile course on the Potomac River and came away with a pair of wins and eight top-three results across the three events. Navy ‘A’ won the Open Eight race, while the Navy ‘F’ boat took the Open Four to highlight Navy’s effort on Sunday.

Seven boats of varsity Navy athletes competed in the Open Eight contest and showcased their respective program’s depth with the top-four times overall. Racing in single-file head action, Navy ‘A’ navigated the Potomac River course with a time of 13:14.3 that bested the 16-boat field by over 10 seconds. Navy’s ‘B’ and ‘C’ boats tied for second place at 13:24.9. Navy ‘E’ rounded out the four-boat sweep with a time of 13:34.6. In total, Navy claimed seven of the top-10 positions in the Open Eight event.

Navy’s second win of the day came courtesy of Navy ‘F’ in the Open Four race. The Mids finished first amongst an 18-boat field with a 15:02.8 result. Navy ‘D’ finished runner-up at 15:04.4 before Navy ‘C’ closed out the Mids’ sweep of the top three positions with a 15:08.4 time. Boats from Hubbard Hall also placed fifth, sixth, eighth and 12th in the event.

Navy’s plebe ranks got to test itself in the Club Eight race. With four entrees, the Mids earned positions two through five. Navy’s top-three boats finished within 4.8 seconds of each other as Navy ‘A’ placed second at 13:54.7, while Navy ‘C’ clocked in at 13:56.6 and Navy ‘D’ was fourth at 13:59.5. The Potomac Boat Club’s ‘A’ boat won the title for the Club Eight race with a time of 13:51.2.



The entire Navy rowing program with its heavyweight, lightweight and women’s teams will be in action on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Philadelphia for the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuykill River.
