Rowing Heads To Philadelphia for the Navy Day Regatta

Navy will have all three programs competiting in Philadelphia

Oct. 11, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight, lightweight and women's rowing teams will all be in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The heavyweight and women's teams will be competing in their second events of the fall season, while the lightweight team will be making its debut on the fall racing circuit.

"Our team is looking forward to racing in Philadelphia. Everyone will get the chance to race twice and compete against some great programs," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "It'll be a good test for our young team. The weather is calling for wet and windy conditions on Saturday, so our guys should feel right at home."

Head women's coach Mike Hughes also looks forward the competition that his team will face this Saturday. "This race will be a great challenge for us as we will start to see many more of our Division I opponents. We were fortunate enough to win both 8 races last year and are taking on the challenge to repeat."

After strong starts by the heavyweight and women's programs in competitions in Washington, D.C. and Norfolk, Va., first-year head coach Shawn Bagnall and his lightweight team have been dutifully preparing for their first event of the season.

"I am proud of the effort and dedication, top-to-bottom, that the squad has been bringing to Hubbard Hall each day," said Bagnall. "As a team we've been emphasizing the process this fall as opposed to the outcome, and the athletes are looking forward to this opportunity to try out some different combinations in a racing format."

This annual event, that began in 1986 as a way to promote and support the U.S. Navy's birthday (Oct. 13, 1775), has seen Midshipmen crew perform well year-in and year-out. At last year's regatta, the three Navy programs combined for a total of seven first-place finishes. All three team's varsity eight boats won their respective race as part of the day's results.
