Navy Crews Find Success at Navy Day Regatta


PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Navy heavyweight and women's crew teams found success at the 2004 Navy Day Regatta held Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The heavyweights swept the races in which they competed, including the Championship Eights race in which Navy was the lone team to post a time under the 13-minute mark. The Mids turned in a time of 12:52.8, while Penn finished second in 13:14.1 In the Second Eights, the Mids were the lone squad to finish under 14 minutes, coming in at 13:58.2, while Penn placed second with a time of 14:06.2. In the College Varsity Fours, Navy turned in a 15:02.9 to win the race, while Penn finished the bridesmaid once again at 15:07.8.

On the women's side, Navy fared nearly as well. The Mids finished third and fourth in the Collegiate Frosh/Novice Eights with marks of 17:39.2 and 17:47.0 respectively. Penn won the race with a mark of 16:50.4, while Saint Joseph's placed second in 17:31.5. In the College JV Eights, Navy paced the field by placing first and second. The Navy A boat came in at 16:10.2, while the Navy B's finished with a time of 16:17.4. Lehigh (17:10.9) and Rutgers (17:35.3) rounded out the top four. In the College Eights, Navy edged out Penn in a tight race -14:50.9 to 14:51.8. Rutgers claimed the next two positions with times of 15:18.9 and 15:30.0

"This was a great start for us," said Navy women's coach Mike Hughes. "I'm really happy with our effort today. We have a fair amount of sharp edges to polish off, but we came away with a good performance in which we can build upon.
