Heavyweights Place Second at Princeton Chase
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Navy's heavyweight crew team closed its fall varsity season by placing second at the Princeton Chase, Sunday afternoon on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
Navy's top entry recorded a time of 14:17 on the three-mile course to finish 20 seconds behind the host Tigers nearly nine seconds in front of third-place Boston University. Navy's other two boats placed eighth and 21st in the 35-team field.
"We finished in third place the last two years here, so I am happy we were able to improve on that finish this season," said heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "We were 24 seconds in back of Princeton last year and wound up beating them at the end of the spring, so to close that gap by a few seconds bodes well for us next spring.
"I also am delighted with our 'B' boat which defeated 'A' boats from seven other schools."
Clothier is pleased with how the fall season went for his crew, a season that saw the Mids win the Navy Day Regatta, place third at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta -- despite losing its rudder halfway through the course -- and eighth at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
"Overall I think we have had a little stronger fall than the last two years. We improved on our placing from last year in almost every race, or successfully defended our 2003 title in the race."
