RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. -
The Navy lightweight rowing team won three of four races with Columbia on Saturday in Ridgefield Park, N.J., but fell in the varsity eight race. Competing on Overpeck Creek, The Mids won the second freshman four, freshman eight and the second varsity eight races.
"Our crews won three of four races, overall that's a successful day," said Navy head coach Steve Perry. "However, our lone loss in the varsity eight indicates we have some work to do at the top end of the squad."
In the final competition of the day, the Lions won the varsity eight race with a time of 6:30.2, easily topping Navy's 6:44.4.
Navy started the day with its two boats finishing one-two in the four race. Navy's `B' boat just clipped the `A' boat for first place by 1.2 seconds, 7:33.7-7:34.9. Columbia's lone entry in the race finished with a time of 7:56.6.
In the freshman eight competition that followed, the Mids came out on the winning end of another tight race. Navy held off a hard-charging Columbia crew by just 0.4 seconds as it won with a time of 6:32.3.
Navy's second varsity, which opened the year with a close win over Princeton, won another tight race on Saturday against the Lions.
