ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy lightweight rowing team had a standout day in its first home meet of the season with wins in all three races against Georgetown on Saturday. In the highlight race of the day on the Severn River, the Mids took back the Forster Cup from the Hoyas with a victory in the varsity eight competition.
"All of our crews managed to find some good rhythm today and capitalize on the changes they been focused on in practice," head coach Shawn Bagnallsaid. "Each crew seemed to have a different element of improvement that made their individual races even more fun to watch."
"The entire team is grateful to bring the Forster Cup to Hubbard Hall, honoring a great Marine and oarsman. However, the team knows there's no time for sleep with a very talented Harvard squad coming to Annapolis next Saturday."
Competing in the varsity eight, Navy edged Georgetown with a finishing time of 5:53.4 to 5:58.2. The Mids took back the Forster Cup for the fourth time in the last seven years.
In the 2V8 competition, Navy's second and third varsity boats took the top two spots with times of 6:02.6 and 6:10.5. Georgetown finished third with a mark of 6:12.5.
Navy's freshmen eight and fourth varsity capped the day off with the top two positions in the 1F/3V race. The freshmen eight finished first with a time of 6:02.5 and the fourth varsity finished six seconds off the time with a mark of 6:09.2. The Hoya's third varsity finished third with a time of 6:21.8
Navy will compete against Harvard next Saturday on the Severn River in Annapolis.
