Navy Lightweights Sweep Forster Cup Event Over Georgetown

April 14, 2018

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 6 Navy lightweight team dominated the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday as the host Midshipmen swept a three-race slate on the Severn River. The Mids won first, second and third varsity eight races and retained possession of the Forster Cup for the fifth straight year.

The Mids day began with the first varsity crews duking it out for the Forster Cup. In the most competitive race of the competition, the hosts took a 6.4-second victory at 6:14.0 – 6:20.4.

In the second varsity eight matchup between Navy and Georgetown, the Mids breezed to a 15.9-second margin of victory over the Hoyas. Navy clocked in at 6:21.7, while Georgetown came in at 6:37.6.

Navy unloaded the majority of its fleet in the third race of the day versus Georgetown. Officially titled the third varsity race, Navy’s third, fourth and fifth crews swept the top-three placements before Georgetown came in fourth place. The Mids’ 3V8 boat registered a time of 6:22.9 ahead of its brethren in the 4V8, who completed the 2,000-meter course at 6:27.6. Navy’s 5V8 and Georgetown’s 3V8 clocked in with times of 6:32.3 and 6:37.5, respectively.

"With our close geography to one another, it's always a tough test when we race Georgetown,” remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. “Our Midshipmen handled the less-than-perfect conditions well, and were able to work through the pieces to have a decent day on the Severn. There's another gear in this group and I know they're excited to continue to work to find it."

The Mids will compete again next week on its home water with a Haines Trophy showdown versus Harvard on Saturday, April 21.
